As an open-source content management system, WordPress offers some great features to online publishers

The first open source content management system I ever used was WordPress. My first blog, which I cannot even remember the name of now, was hosted by the popular content management platform, so I spent some time experiencing the CMS first hand.

My time spent with that personal blog didn't last too long. I didn't have a focus and thus, I began paying less attention to it. A year or so after that, I began using the platform in my professional career. It was great to see that WordPress could be used in a professional manner, or simply as a casual blog.

Fast forward to present time where I produce content and publish for the Mequoda Daily. It too is based on the WordPress platform, but after using this specific system for a few weeks, I noticed how different it was from the previous systems. It was robust, fully customized and had dozens of features I didn't even realize existed in my last excursions with the CMS.

At this time I began to think about the capabilities of the platform that make this platform so well accepted by professionals and casual bloggers alike. The following list describes the features that came to mind while contemplating the value of the WordPress content management system.

In addition to WordPress, there are other great content management systems like Drupal and Telligent. To learn which CMS is right for you, join us on September 21st for our WordPress vs. Drupal vs. Telligent webinar.

Why Online Publishers like WordPress

Reason #1: WordPress is free. It isn't the only free CMS. In fact, there are many. But for many content producers, it's more attractive to try a free CMS over a paid one. This allows the user to experience it without having to spend any money. If for some reason the CMS wasn't what the user was looking for, they would not be out any money in the learning process.

Reason #2: WordPress is user-friendly. I am not horribly savvy when it comes to the world of HTML. This is not a problem for WordPress users, since all they have to do is type or paste their content in the "Visual" part of post and an HTML version will be created.

Reason #3: WordPress offers many plugins. Here is a slew of plugins that can installed to create even better experiences for WordPress users. These plugins can range from tagging devices used to better manage your keywords, to social bookmarking menus. The WordPress website even lists the most popular plugins available for easy viewing.

Reason #4: WordPress allows your audience to comment directly on articles. This is a great way to build community with people interested in your content.

Reason #5: WordPress offers easily customized SEO opportunities. Search engine optimization is key to a website's success. You can manage keywords in WordPress, which includes putting them in the body copy, the title, the page's URL and all the related meta data.

Reason #6: WordPress is customizable. Although there are many templates that can be used for a better visual effect, your WordPress CMS can also be customized by your own graphics if you have them.

Reason #7: WordPress offers great visual components for content publishers. Two or three column designs work well for content publishers. The middle column can house the current articles while the right or left column include primary categories or advertisements.
